Couple tattoos are not new. Many have taken to this form of body art to declare their love for each other or to show their relationship is for keeps. Hollywood pairs like Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas recently decided to solidify their commitment by getting matching wrist tattoos. The soon-to-be-married couple got “To infinity,” inked on Jonas’ wrist and on Turner’s wrist “& beyond,” with a tiny spaceship. For their ninth wedding anniversary in 2017, Beyonce and Jay-Z got matching ‘IV’ tattoos on their ring fingers, representing their birthdays and wedding day. While Kylie Jenner and boyfriend Travis Scott, who share a child together, got matching butterfly tattoos on their ankles. Although couples can get inked throughout the year, it’s February that sees a surge in demand for such inks.

POPULAR WITH YOUNG COUPLES

Valentine’s week is when we see most couples opting for matching inks or tattoos for each other, says Sunny Bhanushali, celebrity tattoo artist and founder at Aliens Tattoo Studio.

“If we do around 50-80 tattoos that are couple tattoos, 40 of them are done during this period. Most of our clients are newly married and eager to get inked. Young unmarried couples are interested too, but they don’t usually get each other’s names, but go for something more subtle. The 25-35 age group comprises most of our customers,” he explains, adding that name tattoos, initials, each other’s birth dates and wedding dates are generally popular design choices.

A WIDE VARIETY OF DESIGNS

Couple tattoos have graduated from just name tattoos. Now many have started to get out-of-the-box ideas that involve stories of how they got together and some of them get tattoos which are incomplete on their own and become one when brought together, says Micky Malani, tattoo artist and co-founder of BodyCanvas Tattoos.

“People have now started understanding that tattoos are permanent and it’s difficult to get rid of them, therefore couples prefer symbolism or something meaningful to names. One of our clients got a tattoo of a girl with a whisk in hand, which was dedicated to his fiancé who is a baker. Another got dumbbells because her partner is a gym freak. A couple who survived a long-distance relationship honoured their love by getting a connecting tattoo where a boy and girl are talking through a string telephone,” he adds. Most couples opt to get inked on the arms so that it’s visible to them and their partners too. Some also get it done on their forearms or biceps. Men are even open to the chest and women sometimes go for the top of the back.
