The Pakistani government of new Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is trying to revive the crippling economy with the help of foreign investments, was left red-faced after a senior bureaucrat was caught stealing the wallet of a member of the Kuwaiti delegation which visited Islamabad to discuss investment plans in Pakistan.

According to a Dawn report, Kuwaiti delegation had lodged a strong protest after a member's wallet went missing. The bureaucrat, a grade-20 officer of the Pakistan Administrative Services Group deployed at the Finance Ministry, was caught through a closed-circuit TV camera (CCTV) footage.

In a six-second leaked video clip, which has now gone viral, the bureaucrat could be seen lifting the wallet from the table and putting it into his pocket. The incident took place after the Kuwaiti delegates and officials of the Finance Ministry had left the hall at the Economic Affairs Division after the meeting.

The issue was brought to the notice of Pakistan officials by the member of the Kuwaiti delegation. He told the officials that his wallet containing a handsome amount of the Kuwaiti dinar had gone missing during the meeting.

When a search of the rooms and employees bore no result, the footage captured on a CCTV camera installed at the hall was examined. The CCTV footage revealed the identity of the culprit who first denied his involvement. When confronted with evidence, he confessed and produced the wallet.

On being informed about the recovery of the wallet, the Kuwaiti delegation insisted to know the identity of the official. After initial reluctance, Pakistani officials revealed the culprit's identity and also showed Kuwaitis the CCTV footage.

While no complaint has been registered with the police, an internal inquiry has been launched by the ministry. Further action would be taken after inquiry, Dawn reported.

When asked about the incident, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said that most of the present bureaucrats had got “moral training” during the previous governments.
