With the memory of the Kathua rape and murder case still fresh in people's mind, the rape of a minor tribal girl in Ramban district of Jammu has sent shock waves across Jammu and Kashmir.

Protests rocked the Srinagar-Jammu national highway near Ramsoo on Monday after a 13-year-old tribal nomad girl was allegedly raped and impregnated by a 22-year-old man in Ramban district.

Police have arrested the accused and booked him for rape under Section 376 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC).

Senior Superintendent of Police, Ramban, Anita Sharma told DNA that the case was brought to their notice on January 4 when the mother of the victim filed a written complaint about her daughter's rape.

Given the sensitivity of the matter, police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by the Additional Superintendent of Police to probe the matter. The girl is undergoing treatment in a hospital after she experienced bleeding and developed an infection.

Police are waiting for the survivor to recuperate to record her statement. "She is pregnant but we do not know how advanced it is. Only a medical report can confirm. We are awaiting the report. We are also waiting for her recovery to record her statement. So far, she has named one accused and we have arrested him," said Sharma.

Protesters demanded justice for the victim. They dispersed after police briefed them on the action taken.

"They did not know things properly. We briefed them and redressed their grievance and they dispersed peacefully," said Sharma
