A 19-year-old girl, upset over failing the NEET exams, committed suicide by consuming rat poison at Ginjee in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, late on Monday night.
The police said, the young medical aspirant, Prateebha, who had scored an impressive 1125 marks out of 1200 in the Class XII board exams, was upset after the NEET results were out.
The tragic death of the medical aspirant prompted a call by DMK working president MK Stalin to chief ministers of southern states and West Bengal to oppose the NEET as it "discriminated against non-Hindi speaking students" and put those from the economically-weaker sections at "fundamental disadvantage". He also pointed out the mistakes in the translated NEET question papers.
Prateebha collapsed after consuming rat poison. She was rushed to a primary health centre first and then taken to Tiruvannamalai Government Hospital, where she was declared dead. She hailed from a poor family in Villupuram district. While her father was a coolie, her mother was a farm worker.
