Taking a cue from the Kiss of Love protest staged recently in Kochi against moral policing, a group of youngsters has decided to send used sanitary napkins by post to the owner of the Kochi-based private rubber glove factory where women workers were strip-searched when a stained sanitary napkin was found left behind in a toilet.
Enraged by the barbaric act, the youths launched a protest against the company. Announcing their novel protest through Facebook and social media, they called upon the general public to join them in the protest by sending used napkins to 'Mr YA Rahim, managing director, Asma Rubber Products, 39-B, Cochin Special Economic Zone, Kakkanadu, Kochi – 682037. They claim that the factory executive has already started receiving used napkins as senders are posting pictures of the parcel on Facebook. Since the factory officials have not been attending calls since the leak of the incident, the veracity of protesters' claims cannot be ascertained.
The shocking incident which took place on December 10 came to light on December 27 when a section of woman workers, were subjected to a strip-search, and lodged a petition with the police. They said in the complaint that since no woman worker admitted to leaving behind a used sanitary napkin in the washroom, a woman supervisor summoned nearly 40 woman workers below 50 years of age to the dressing room and strip-searched them.
The police were reluctant to take action, however they changed their stance when the state women's commission intervened. Commission member Dr Lissy Jose, who visited the factory following news reports asked both the police and firm to file a report to the commission on the incident. The police were of the view that since the women had been searched by a woman supervisor it is not an offence.
"If it has really happened as alleged by the workers, then it is an act of outraging the modesty of a woman and intrusion of privacy. It is a serious offence," she said.
Police have made no arrests so far, but a case has been registered.
The management says that it is a baseless allegation and the women workers who filed the complaint are not on good terms with the supervisor and lodged the petition to settle scores with her.
