Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) president Upendra Kushwaha received a major jolt on Saturday when the party's legislators in Bihar revolted against his decision of quitting the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and said they were still a part of the saffron coalition.

The RLSP has two MLAs — Sudhanshu Shekhar and Lalan Paswan — and one MLC Sanjiv Shyam in Bihar and all three are up in arms against Kushwaha.

Addressing media here on Saturday, they said Kushwaha had left the NDA for personal interests. "We had made it clear to Kushwaha that we would like to continue in the NDA, but he unilaterally decided otherwise," said Shyam.

He also countered Kushwaha's claims that the RLSP was not given a share of the NDA's profit (ministerial berths in Bihar when the NDA returned to power in 2017) and said, "The truth is that Kushwaha never tried for getting any state ministership when the deal was cracked as he was content to have his Union ministership."

Shyam and Paswan pitched for a ministerial berth for Shekhar, a first-term MLA and the youngest of the trio, and said they will be disappointed if the same was not considered. Earlier, both MLAs of the RLSP had also met senior JD-U leaders in Patna, triggering talks that they were mulling to switch over.

Among the three MPs of RLSP — Kushwaha, Ram Kumar Sharma and Arun Kumar — the latter has already parted ways with the RLSP around two years ago and Kushwaha's lone supporter remains Sharma.

Kushwaha though did not comment on the episode but the RLSP tweeted from its official Twitter handle, "The greed of money and power has compelled two-three persons to go against the democratic system of the party. Upendra Kushwaha has sacrificed the perks of power to give strength to the voices of the oppressed people and will continue to do so in future. They will realise their mistake when Nitish Kumar loses his power."

‘Symbol Is Ours’

  • The RLSP’s legislators in Bihar also staked claim to the party office and symbol of ‘fan’
  • They said they will soon approach Election Commission to stake claim for party symbol
  • Among 3 MPs of RLSP, Kushwaha is now left with one, other than him
