The ethnic violence in Manipur, despite dying down in media, is still continuing in parts of the state, with over a dozen deaths reported in the last five days, along with over 30 people getting injured due to Kuki-Meitei clashes and incidents of firing across the state.

In the midst of the violent incidents and ongoing turmoil in the state, the N Biren Singh government has decided to make a strong move by appointing famed officer Colonel (retired) Nectar Sanjenbam as senior superintendent (combat) in Manipur police department for a five-year tenure.

Retired Army officer Nectar Sanjenbam has been appointed as the new SSP of Manipur and has a specialty in battling insurgency in the violence-torn state, which is what he has been doing over the last two decades, according to reports.

The new Manipur SSP retired prematurely from the Indian Army last year and is now celebrated for leading India’s surgical strikes across the Myanmar border in 2015 and being a part of the 21 Para (Special Forces) during his tenure as an Army officer.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Colonel Sanjenbam was awarded the Kirti Chakra in 2015 for his contributions towards carrying out cross-border raids in Myanmar after insurgency attacks in Manipur’s Chandel district near the Myanmar border.

Further, Colonel Sanjenbam was also awarded the Shaurya Chakra gallantry award in 2005 during his tenure as a captain. With a specialty in combating insurgency, it is expected that the new SSP will be BJP’s key to ending violence in Manipur.

This move by the N Biren Singh government comes in the midst of rising cries from the Opposition to remove him from office after failure to control the ethnic violence in Manipur. However, the BJP-led Centre has given no hints on changing the Chief Minister of the state in the midst of ongoing disturbance, a move which has the potential to cost them the next election in the state.
