Kashmir Floods: 6 dead, 10 trapped in debris; Centre sends more NDRF teams for assist

Jammu and Kashmir was in the grip of panic on Monday as several areas of the valley and parts of Jammu were in deluge caused by rains due to which four people have died and fate of 13 others was unknown.

Seven months after the devastating floods, Kashmir was on Monday staring at another deluge following incessant rains with River Jhelum in spate at several places in the Valley. One person died and 10 others are trapped in debris of a house which collapsed in Budgam district of Kashmir valley due to floods. in Kashmir.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and conveyed to him that relief materials are being air dashed to the flood-affected valley in the shortest possible time.

Keeping in view of the devastating deluge of last September, the Central government understands the kind of panic among people of Kashmir which is again facing floods and is prepared to deal with the situation, said Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju.

Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Naeem Akhtar informed the Legislative and said, " Three control rooms have been established in North, South and Central Kashmir, besides 4 lakh sand bags have also been made available to deal with any eventuality."

"Besides, boats have also been requisitioned and day-night vigil is being done on the bunds to monitor the situation", he said.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday urged the state government to take all possible measures to ensure prevention of loss to life and property in the Valley in the wake of flood situation.

"The administration should take all possible measures and work in close coordination with the locals to ensure that any loss to life and property is prevented at all costs," Omar said.

Centre to send 8 more NDRF teams to Kashmir

The Centre would send eight fully equipped NDRF teams to Kashmir to assist the Jammu and Kashmir government in its efforts to safeguard life and property in the wake of the flood situation in the Valley.

"Eight fully equipped NDRF teams will be arriving in Kashmir to assist the state government in its efforts to safeguard life and property of people in the wake of flood situation arisen due to incessant rains that lashed the Valley during past few days," a J&K government spokesman said.

Two NDRF teams comprising 100 personnel have already been rushed by an IAF plane from Bhatinda in Punjab to Srinagar.

Jammu & Kashmir govt to airlift stranded passengers as weather improves

The government is making serious efforts for early airlifting of passengers stranded in Jammu following closure of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the Minister of State for Transport (independent charge), Rural Development and Horticulture told reporters. He directed the district administration to throw open all four halls of JDA at the General Bus Stand for the passengers and also accommodate rest of them at Jammu Haj House.

It was informed that at present there are about 2,000 stranded passengers at GB Jammu and they are being provided free meals by the district administration.

Jammu & Kashmir Govt sanctions Rs 235 crore to meet flood situation

Jammu and Kashmir government today sanctioned Rs 235 crore to meet the situation created by floods in the state, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed announced in the Assembly. "I have authorized release of Rs 225 crore in favour of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir and Rs 10 crore in favour of Divisional Commissioner, Jammu and SDRF (State Disaster Relief Fund) for rescue and relief," he said while making a statement on the flood situation.

Chief Minister Mufti Mohmmad Sayeed makes statement in assembly

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohmmad Sayeed said one person died and 10 others are trapped in debris of a house which collapsed in Budgam district of Kashmir valley due to floods.

"An unfortunate event has occurred in Laldan area of Budgam district where ten people have been trapped in the house debris," he said in statement in the Assembly.

"We hope and pray that all of them survive. As of now we are not in a position to confirm either way," he said.

Sayeed said police has already reached the spot and "we will try our best that all of them will survive".

Youth washed away in flash floods in Udhampur

Angrez Singh (25) was washed away in a stream (nullah) and two others were injured in a flash flood.

The injured have been shifted to district hospital Udhampur. Singh's body is yet to be recovered, they said, adding, an operation has been launched to trace the body.

It further added, "Army has undertaken strengthening of weak points on the Anti Flood Bund along Jhelum river at two locations in Sonawar Area."

Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed asks for Army support

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has asked the Army to provide logistic support, in terms of men and machinery, to the civil administration to effectively counter the flood situation in the Valley.

Talking to reporters at Lal Chowk this morning, Sayeed said government is taking all necessary steps to mitigate the problems of the people.

"We are monitoring the situation and all necessary steps have been taken to meet any eventuality," Sayeed said, adding, a team of ministers has been deputed for maintaining vigil on ground.

Sayeed also assured the small traders who were affected by last year's floods in the state that the government will provide them assistance to restart their businesses.

Exams postponed 

"The government today decided to shut all schools up to class 12 for today and tomorrow in the wake of flood alert," said Director Education, Kashmir, Showkat Beigh.

He said all Board of School Examinations scheduled for today and tomorrow have also been postponed.

Meanwhile, University of Kashmir has also postponed its annual examinations for two days.

"The university examinations scheduled for today and tomorrow have been postponed. The new dates for these papers will be notified separately," a University official said.

NDRF teams rushed to Kashmir

Two NDRF teams comprising 100 personnel have been rushed as part of contingency measures in Jammu and Kashmir, where Jhelum river today crossed the danger level in Srinagar and Sangam area of South Kashmir following heavy rains.

The two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, comprising about 50 personnel each, were taken in an IAF plane from Bhatinda in Punjab to Srinagar.

"We have pre-positioned two of our teams in the Kashmir Valley in order to combat any situation in the wake of flood alert.

"Four other teams at Ghaziabad and Bhatinda will be on standby," NDRF Director General O P Singh said.

Hope we don't have to face the same situation again, says Omar Abdullah 

Former chief minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said that he hoped Jammu and Kashmir doesn’t face the flood situation that took place in September last year, over the flood alert issued in the state following incessant rainfall.

“It is true that water of river Jhelum has crossed the danger mark. But, there is a huge difference in the water levels of September and now. I hope and pray that we don't have to face the same situation we faced in September,” Abdullah said.

Jhelum river has crosses danger level in Srinagar and Sangam area of South Kashmir

A senior official said water level of river Jhelum at 6 AM at Sangam (South Kashmir) and Ram Munshi Bagh (Srinagar city) has touched 22'.4 feet and 18'.8 feet respectively. Danger level at Sangam is 21 feet and at Ram Munshi Bagh it is 18 feet.

People living on the banks of the river Jhelum have been asked to remain alert and advised to move to safer places. Old persons and children have also been asked to shift to specially set up camps, a government spokesman has said. 

All precautionary measures have been put in place, says DCM Dr. Nirmal Singh

Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh on Sunday assured there was no need to panic in the wake of heavy rains in the Kashmir, as the government was on full alert.

"The state administration is on full alert in the wake of heavy rains in the Valley. The situation is being monitored continuously," Singh informed the Assembly here after members from different parties raised the issue of the flood threat.

"People should not panic and assured that all precautionary measures have been put in place," he said.

221 families evacuated to safer places

The government has evacuated 221 families to safer places due to heavy rains causing soil erosion and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Budgam district of the state.

State Agriculture Minister Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura today told the Assembly that due to the continuous downpour various areas of Budgam have been affected by way of land erosion and landslides and 221 families have been shifted to safer areas.The minister said 221 families of Chillan Chotinar, Tilsara, Charar-e-Sharief, Nilnag Nagam, Watkloo, Ladden, Bringan, Nego, Hangoo Suresyar, Kumar Mohalla Nagam, Freswar Khansahib, Shalinar Khansahib, Kristwar Chadoora, Suresyar and Branwar villages evacuated.

10 kg rice has been provided to the each affected family, besides it has also been ensured that all basic amenities are provided to them.He said the district administration, under the supervision of the deputy commissioner, is taking stock of the situation.

Agencies on alert

All agencies including Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED), Fire and Emergency service are on the job and have been told to remain extra alert.

Meanwhile, DGP K Rajendra Kumar has directed all ranks of Jammu and Kashmir Police to extend their help to the civil administration and public.
