Separatists are bracing up for a major showdown with the Centre over the contentious issue of state subject law enshrined in the Constitution of India under Article 35 A. Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) of separatists have called for a two-day shutdown from August 5 against any move to tinker with the state subject law. The Supreme Court is set to resume the hearing on Article 35A on August 6.

Sources said that Jammu & Kashmir governor N N Vohra has urged the Centre to defer the hearing on Article 35 A till the elected government is in charge.

Under Article 35 A, Indian citizens other than the residents of J&K cannot acquire immovable property get state government jobs or have the voting rights in the restive state.

Charu Wali Khanna, a resident of J&K, who settled outside the state, has challenged the legality of the Article 35 A in the SC on the grounds that the law disenfranchises and takes away her succession rights. "We want to make it clear to the Government that every attempt made to change the demographic nature of the state will be stiffly resisted," said JRL in a statement.

The JRL is a conglomerate of Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and J&K Liberation Front chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik, who spearheaded the 2016 unrest in Kashmir.

"They can kill us or detain us, but we won't succumb to pressure tactics. We are even ready to sacrifice our lives," the trio said.

JRL said they are in touch with all segments of society including the legal fraternity, traders, civil society members, academia and others so that there is complete unanimity and cohesion among all to resist this serious assault.

"On August 5 and 6, a complete protest strike will be observed. People will register their disapproval and resistance to this politically motivated move," JRL said.
