Two motorcycle-borne men shot dead an unarmed bank guard and stole Rs18 lakh in cash from a petrol pump owner who had gone to deposit it at the Bank of India’s East Delhi branch in Patparganj on Monday morning.

Vijay Prakash Gupta, owner of a petrol pump in east Delhi, went to deposit Rs18 lakh in cash at the Bank of India in his Esteem. The moment he stepped out of his car outside the bank, two men attacked him and tried to snatch the money.

The bank’s guard, Rajender Negi, an ex-serviceman, was not armed like bank guards are expected to. Nevertheless, he tried to stop the youths. But they shot him with a country-made pistol in the chest. Negi began bleeding profusely and fell down. He later succumbed to his injuries at Max Hospital.

A broken country-made gun and bullet were found at the scene of crime. “I reached just as the gunmen fled. One who them was wearing a helmet. They were not on the bike then,” said Ram Snehi, the bank’s second guard.

Negi has two sons aged 15 and 13 and a daughter aged 17. He retired as a Naik from the ninth battalion, Garhwal Regiment, in 1997 and was working with the bank since 2002.

“My brother was brave and that's why he fought gunmen without a gun. Why he did not have a gun is the bank’s responsibility, as we have no idea about their policies towards guards. His body has still not undergone post-mortem,” said Ranbir Singh Negi, brother of the deceased. “If the police were as brave as my brother, crime in Delhi would have been much less,” the guard’s brother said.

The gunmen probably had information about the money. “Gupta had been depositing money at the bank, everyday, for the last two years. I always urge businessmen to change their routine where big money is concerned,” said DCP (East Delhi) Anand Mohan.

“Normally Gupta would deposit around Rs9 lakh every day. As yesterday was a bank holiday, he had the collection for two days, which ran into Rs 18 lakh,” PTI quoted an official as saying.
“We have watched CCTV videos and the gunmen will be caught soon,” said a police official.
