Result update:

Bishnupur voted in the 6th phase of election on 12th May. Here is how the candidates fared

BJP's Saumitra Khan who couldn't even campaign in his constituency owing to police restriction won by 78,047 votes defeating TMC's Shyamal Santra.

Constituency profile:

Bishnupur, the land of terracotta temples is witnessing an election battle primarily between TMC and BJP. However, it has been a traditional Left stronghold with CPI(M) winning the seat 11 times. From 1971 to 2014, CPI(M) won at a stretch from this SC- reserved constituency primarily located in Bankura district, that too by massive margin. The streak was broken finally in 2014 by TMC candidate Saumitra Khan. Ironically, in this election, Khan is BJP  candidate.

Khan who was a Congress MLA joined TMC in 2012 and later became MP. Over several issues he had a fallout with the party and finally left Mamata's outfit in January this year. He later joined BJP. However owing to several cases against him including that of sand mining and allegation of taking money from students with false promises, Khan is unable to enter Bankura due to High Court's order. His entire campaign is being run by wife Sujata Khan. Sujata claims voters will give TMC big shock on May 23, as there is a huge silent undercurrent for BJP.

There is no doubt that BJP has got some traction in Bishnupur as evident from Amit Shah's massive rallly. Hence TMC is not taking things lightly even though they are comfortably placed. Birbhum strongman Anubrata Mondal has been roped in as observer by TMC to ensure smooth coordination. Party's candidate Shyamal Santra is taking no chances and is working hard to ensure margin increases. He is also wary of Saumitra trying to woo dissidents in TMC to work against the ruling party of the state. In the last election, Khan won by 1.19 lakh votes defeating two-time CPM MP Susmita Bauri. This time though, Susmita is not contesting and former Left MP from Durgapur Sunil Khan is CPI(M) candidate. Congress candidate is Narayan Chandra Khan who has failed to get much traction among the workers.

The assembly segments under Bishnupur Lok Sabha constituency are Barjora, Onda, Bishnupur, Katulpur (SC), Indas (SC), Sonamukhi (SC) and Khandaghosh (SC). Bishnupur polled on May 12.
