Days before Kerala was to vote for a new government in 2016, a 30-year-old Dalit law student was found murdered at her home. Later, it was revealed that she was sexually assaulted before being brutally murdered on April 28 in Perumbavoor. 

As the incident took place just 18 days before the voting for the Assembly elections (voting took place on May 16), it took a political colour as Opposition demanded quick arrest of those behind the crime. 

However, the first arrest was made only a month after the incident when the Kerala Police, under the new LDF government of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, nabbed a a migrant worker from Assam. 

Here is all you need to know about the rape and murder of the law student:

1- Jisha, a 30-year-old law student from Perumbavoor, was found dead at her home on April 28, 2016.

2- She was a student at the Government Law College, Ernakulam.

3- The woman, who hailed from a poor family, was brutally assaulted using sharp-edged weapons before being murdered at her house.

4- The body was found in mutilated condition. Forensics concluded that the body injuries showed violence and possible torture.

5- The accused, Mohammed Ameerul Islam, fled Perumbavoor soon after committing the crime and was arrested from Kancheepuram in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, 50 days after the gruesome incident.

6- The UDF government led by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy came under severe attack from the Opposition during the elections. 

7- The Congress-led UDF regime was attacked for 'tardy' progress in the probe and 'failure' to nab culprits.

8- LDF government, after assuming power on May 25 last year, changed the investigation team and entrusted the probe to senior woman IPS officer ADGP B Sandhya in its first cabinet meeting itself.

9- Finger prints of over 5,000 people were examined by the SIT personnel who went through over 20 lakh telephonic conversations before reaching the accused.

10- A blood stained footwear found from a canal near the victim's house was one of the key evidence in identifying the culprit.
