Bahujan Samajwadi Party leader Mayawati on Sunday accused the Congress of showcasing double-standard by siding with Shiv Sena after Rahul Gandhi's remark on Veer Savarkar in the 'Bharat Bachao Rally' at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan on Saturday.

She said that the Congress Party is still maintaining its alliance with the Sena in Maharashtra, even after the Sena supported the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the parliament, and opposed Congress's stand on Savarkar.

"The Shiv Sena is still with its core agenda. The party backed the Centre on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The party is now opposed to the Congress’ stand on Savarkar. But the Congress party is still with the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. This act only shows Congress’s double standard," the BSP chief tweeted.

She also urged the Congress party to clarify its stand on the party's alliance with the Sena.

"Congress should clarify its stand on its alliance with the Shiv Sena, otherwise, it will be considered a diversionary tactic by them to divert the public's attention from their very own party’s weaknesses," she added.

On Saturday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP government for asking him to apologise over his 'Rape-in-India' remark. Addressing the issue, he said, "I was told in Parliament by BJP yesterday, 'Rahul ji, you gave a speech. Apologise for that.' I was told to apologise for speaking something correct. My name is not Rahul Savarkar. My name is Rahul Gandhi. I will never apologise for truth."

In his statement, Congress alluded to the Veer Savarkar, a freedom fighter and Hindutva ideologue who wrote petitions to British Government requesting his release from Celluar jail in Andaman.

Rahul Gandhi's statement did not go down well with the Shiv Sena. Hitting back at Rahul Gandhi's statement, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said that since their party respected Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, the Congress, too, should do their part and not insult Savakarkar, a Hindutva ideologue admired by the Shiv Sena.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party has also urged the central government to confer Bharat Ratna to Savarkar.

Shiv Sena's support to the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha has also cast aspersions on the Sena-Congress relationship.

Putting their ideological differences aside, Shiv Sena forged an alliance with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to form the government in Maharashtra, and in the process breaking a 30-year-old alliance with the BJP.
