An eight-year-old girl suffering from dengue died in a private hospital here in course of treatment on Tuesday morning.

Family members of the girl have alleged negligence by doctors and hospital staff in attending to the patient, leading to her death. But the hospital administration claimed that the girl died a natural death.

According to information, Shreya Shah, 8, a resident of Vrindavan Society, Bhestan, was suffering from fever and abdominal pain since April 27. Shreya was brought to Vankawala Children Hospital at Majura Gate the next day, where doctors prescribed some medicines. However, Shreya’s condition deteriorated further and on April 29, she was admitted to ICU unit of Vankawala hospital for treatment. On Tuesday morning, Shreya died in the hospital.

The sudden death of the girl shocked her family members, who accused doctors and hospital management of negligence. The family members created a ruckus in the hospital and demanded action against the negligent staff.

Sujit Shah, the girl’s father, said that her condition was serious since Monday night, but there was no doctor to attend to the girl.

“On Monday night, her condition worsened and I asked the nurse on duty to inform the doctor, Mangukia, who was on night duty. After trying for more than 40 minutes, Mangukia came to the ward. He checked Shreya and said that there was nothing to worry, and asked us to go to sleep. Early on Tuesday morning, when Dr Sudip Sengupta inspected Shreya, he was shocked to see her condition and immediately transferred her to ventilator, but within half an hour she died,” Shah added.

Doctors and hospital management denied any fault or negligence in girl’s treatment and claimed that Shreya died a natural death.

“The girl was very serious when she was admitted to the hospital and we gave our best treatment to her. Doctors used to check her blood, urine, pâté late and other samples daily and so there is no chance of negligence on our side. Yet, a committee of doctors has been formed to investigate the matter and if anyone is found guilty, action will be taken,” Bipin Lapsiwala, president of the hospital, said.
