40,037 new names in Ahmedabad’s voters list

There would be over 42,000 first time voters in the upcoming Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections. The newly prepared voters' list for the city by the AMC has registered 40,037 new voters in 64 wards of the city.

With the new voters' list, the total number of registered voters in Ahmedabad has touched, 35,89,105 as per the recently published voters list. Dani Limda ward, has received the highest number of applications to register new names in the voter's list with 3,666 candidates.

After the scrutiny, there are around 2,551 new voters in Dani Limda ward, highest new voters followed by Nikole ward, with 3,392 applications, 2,676 new voters post scrutiny. Third in position is Behrampura, with 3,010 applications and 2,145 newly registered voters post scrutiny. In all, 9,139 applications for adding names in the new voters' list were rejected.

The AMC officials received 1,741 applications for name change, of which, AMC has approved 1,488 applications. Surprisingly, of the 193 applications received for name cancellation from voters' list, only 165 applications were considered.

The AMC officials said that, of the total newly registered voters in the city, majority of registrations would be first time voters. "Majority of newly registered voters would have become eligible to vote this year. Hence, we registered only those new voters who have completed 18 years on January 1, 2010. So, our analysis of the voters' list says that, there is an addition of around 40,037 young voters in the upcoming elections," informed a senior AMC official.

The AMC had received around 1,040 applications to change area and they approved 985 applications. The highest applications for change in area of voting were registered in Bodakdev, with 99 applications to change voting ward and 97 were approved, followed by Isanpur with 95 of which 82 were approved. Third in line was Nikole ward with 71 applications and 56 approved.
Summing up applications for all categories, the AMC received 52,150 applications, of which 42,675 received due approval.
