Early Saturday morning at around 3 am, Mumbai witnessed heavy rainfall that continued up to 6.30 am. This was followed by consistent drizzles in various parts of the city.
As it's a weekend, several offices will be closed, but that will not deter vehicles from plying on the road.
The BMC's disaster management team on Friday had issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rain in various pockets of the city.
A statement from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued on Friday, too, informed that conditions were favourable for the further advancement of the Southwest monsoon into more parts of the central Arabian Sea and Maharashtra, including Mumbai, during the next 24 hours.
"Increased rainfall activity over coastal Karnataka, Goa and south Maharashtra is likely to continue till June 10. It is very likely to extend to north coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai, from tomorrow," the statement said.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's spokesperson, Ram Dotonde informed that it is likely that north Konkan will have heavy rainfall from June 9 to 11. "Mumbai city falls in this region. The BMC commissioner held an meeting with IMD officials for preparedness for monsoon. Monsoon is expected to arrive in Mumbai on June 9 or 10".
"The fire brigade, NDRF, and Navy are been alerted to prepare their teams in eastern, western and island city areas in case of an emergency. If any flood-like situation we have kept ready civic schools across 24 wards as temporary shelters. Citizens can get information and updates on rains, traffic, emergency contact numbers on ' Disaster Management MCGM' application and also from dm.mcgm.gov.in website".
The city witnessed heavy rains on Thursday resulting in water-logged streets and late running suburban trains.
