A fire that broke out at Kothari Mansion in South Mumbai's Fort area is yet to be doused, fire officials said, adding that the rains had made it difficult to put the fire out.

"Two firefighters had minor injuries, rest everybody is safe. We deployed 16 fire engines, 11 tankers and 150 fire officersl," fire officer Prabhat Rahangdale told media here.

The official said the injured firemen - Suhas Mane and Sudhir Deolekar - were undergoing treatment at the trauma care ward of the civic-run Nair Hospital, where their condition was stated to be stable.
Mane sustained injuries in his left hand and leg, while Deolekar suffered wounds to his head, neck and legs. They got stuck in the cage of an aerial ladder engaged in the fire -fighting operation and were immediately rescued using another ladder

However, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

"This building has been vacant for around four years. It seems like a very old building. The staircase inside had collapsed long ago, so there was no way for us to go inside. It is a very congested area, so chances were that the fire could spread to neighbouring buildings as well. We are investigating the cause of the fire," Prabhat added.

The deputy spokesperson of BMC, Tanaji Kamble, informed that the building is a MHADA cessed structure which was declared in C-1 category (extremely dilapidated condition) and was vacated a few years ago.

6 Fire Engines, 2 QRV, 11 Jumbo Tankers, 2 ALP, 1TTL 108 ambulance, 3 JCB machines, and 1 Emergency Medical Service vehicle had been deployed.

According to Assistant Municipal Commissioner of A-ward, Kiran Dighavkar, BEST officials and 50 labours are sent to the spot.

Two fire tenders were injured earlier this morning after a Level-4 fire broke out inside Patel Chambers here in Fort area.

The fire officials got injured after a part of the building collapsed while they were dousing the fire, sustaining minor injuries.
