New variants not related to upsurge in Kerala and Maharashtra COVID cases: VK Paul

Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Tuesday, said over 1.17 crore people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 so far.

Dr VK Paul, Member of the NITI Aayog said on Tuesday that there has been no evidence to back that the new variants are responsible for the sudden upsurge of COVID-19 cases in Kerala and Maharashtra. As per Union Helth Ministry data, at present there are 187 individuals detected with UK coronavirus strain, six people with South African strain and one with Brazilian strain.

Maharashtra and Kerala have 75% active COVID-19 cases. Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary, Health Ministry has said that Kerala has 38% of the total active cases in the country, while Maharashtra has 37% of the total active cases.

Meanwhile, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan has written to PM Narendra Modi regarding 'new restricts imposed by Government of Karnataka on the entry of people coming from Kerala'. 

"Imposing restrictions of inter-state movement of people by states is contrary to instructions of Govt of India," he writes.

 

India's COVID-19 data 

India's total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 1,10,16,434 on Tuesday.

10,584 new COVID-19 infections were being reported in a single day.

According to data from the Union Health Ministry recoveries have surpassed 1.07 crore.

With 78 new fatalities in a day, the overall death toll increased to 1,56,463, as per the ministry data.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease reached 1,07,12,665.

National recovery rate from COVID-19 is 97.24% while case fatality rate stands at 1.42%.

The active coronavirus infections in the country have reduced to 1,47,306.

This comprises 1.34% of the total caseload, the data stated.

The country's active caseload as on Monday stood at 1,50,055 cases.

This is 1.36% of the total positive cases.

The Health Ministry stated that seven states or UTs have not reported any new cases in last 24 hours.
