Man, suffering from an end stage disease, has a donor but is unable to collect a whopping sum of Rs30L required for surgery
A daughter's will to give a new lease of life to her 65-year-old father has hit a roadblock as the family has failed to collect the money, Rs30 lakh, required for the surgery.
Vithal Detke — a resident of Kalyan who is an end stage liver disease patient — requires urgent liver transplant and the daughter (37) has agreed to donate a part of her liver. But the family is running from pillar to post to collect money needed for the surgery.
While Detke has two sons and a daughter, the daughter's blood group, O positive, matched with his. After consultation with her husband, the 37-year-old daughter, Maya Waydande, decided to offer a part of liver to save her father's life.
However, the story does not end here. Getting a donor was half the job, and funding the transplant was another. Even after collecting money from friends and relatives, the family could only manage to collect Rs14 lakh — an amount not sufficient to go ahead with the surgery.
Dr Ravi Mohanka, chief surgeon and head of the department of Liver transplant and Hepato-Biliary Surgery at Global Hospitals, said: "The patient had developed advanced stage liver disease and the only option is transplant.
The patient's daughter is ready to donate a part of her liver and after several tests we found that she is fit for the transplant. The patient's family is falling short of money and approached various charitable trusts to help them. We also provided them with a document to submit to the charitable organisations. The patient needs surgery as soon as possible. The hospital has given an estimate of Rs25 lakh for the surgery."
Talking about their helplessness, Detke's nephew Rohit said: "We are striving hard to collect funds for the surgery. Approaching the NGO has not been helpful. In our case, we have a donor but we don't have enough money for the surgery. We are hoping that some NGO or individual come ahead and help us collect this fund. If anyone is interested to help, they can directly give the cheque to the hospital."
