Indian film-makers are not sure if the Slumdog…star has it in her to make it in Bollywood

Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire has certainly given Frieda Pinto more than her 15 minutes of fame. But Indian film-makers have some advice for the model — that is, if she plans to join Bollywood: They want Danny’s Latika to brush up on her acting skills and land meatier roles in which she can flaunt her performance, as her small-yet-crucial role in the Oscar-winning movie isn’t a testament of her acting abilities. Despite the Hollywood spotlight on her, some Indian directors are not even looking to cast her in their films.

Anurag Kashyap: I would not cast her in any of my films as of today. She has been very lucky to get a film like Slumdog Millionaire but now the real test and hard work begins as she has a long way to go before she develops into a fine actress. She hasn’t really charmed me with her performance; she should not get carried away with the attention she is getting.

Abhishek Kapoor: Freida is riding high on the waves of Slumdog…success, but I cannot really judge her right now. I want to see more of her in her forthcoming films. But yes, if she develops her acting skills and uses this spotlight to her advantage carefully she could become an artiste to reckon with.

Harry Baweja: I want to cast Freida. I think she has  big potential in future and of what I have seen of her, she can fit into any role. It is a characteristic of any good actress that she is versatile. I would want to see her get more on-screen presence in her next films. She would make a mark on her own then.

Kabir Khan: I really cannot say much about her and I think she has to get meatier roles to really get recognition as an actress. Right now, Slumdog…is on a high and so everyone associated with the film is riding on that. Freida certainly has got the best stepping stone that she could have possibly imagined, but unfortunately I cannot judge her acting as she isn’t there much in the film. I would definitely make her go through an audition if I think of casting her in my movie.
