Four major films released last weekend ahead of Independence Day. Both Hindi films – Gadar 2 and OMG 2 – have done well at the box office with the former breaking several records. Down south, Rajinikanth’s Jailer is also setting the box office on fire, earning nearly Rs 400 crore in six days. However, the fourth film – Chiranjeevi’s Bhola Shankar – has failed to live up to these standards. The film, which opened to moderate numbers, has crash-landed badly, struggling to earn even Rs 1 crore on a national holiday.

Bhola Shankar earned Rs 16.25 crore on its opening day, a weak figure for a film starring Chiranjeevi. It then dropped by almost 70% on Saturday, and a further 90% on Monday, earning just Rs 60 lakhs on the day. Tuesday being Independence Day, the film had a shot to revive whatever it could but the film failed to take advantage. Bhola Shankar earned a paltry Rs 75 lakh on Tuesday, taking its total domestic net haul over five days to just Rs 27 crore. Its worldwide gross is also under Rs 50 crore and the film is expected to shut shop without ever reaching that mark.

Given that the film’s reported production budget is Rs 101 crore and the landing cost even higher, this is a disastrous performance for the film. The film was also criticise for its content with many viewers expressing dismay at the veteran superstar not playig a character suited for his age. The critics also panned the film calling it illogical and very over-the –top. This all led to a negative word of mouth, affecting the film’s performance.

Directed by Meher Ramesh, Bhola Shankar also stars Tamannaah Bhatia, Keerthy Suresh and Sushanth. Trade pundits are calling the film one of Chiranjeevi’s biggest disasters of late with some headline dubbing it ‘mega disaster’, a play on Chiranjeevi’s moniker of Megastar.
