With the new year, it’s festival time in the city. The heritage of the city is celebrated through the Banganga Festival which is an every year affair. Jointly organised by the Indian Heritage Society - Mumbai and MTDC, the Banganga Festival is a tribute to the epic journey of the pilgrims who found their way to this region over 2,500 years ago.

To be held on January 7 and 8, the Festival will aim to promote landmark sites, comprising of several temples dating back to 6th Century BC. The Festival also aims to increase awareness and conserve the Banganga tank and its environs.

“We started the project in 1992 to conserve the Banganga tank. People who are born and brought up in Mumbai don’t know where it is located or the history behind it. Our aim is to bring about awareness,” says Anita Garware, chairperson of Indian Heritage Society.

Fighting the difficulties like drainage water getting mixed with the pure tank water, the Festival has come a along way.

A two-day musical extravaganza, and a tribute to the heritage, rhythm and music of the city, the Banganga Festival will witness performances by renowned artists like Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia (flute) on Jan 7 and Veena Sahasrabuddhe (vocal) on Jan 8.

Present during the inauguration will be Shri. S.M. Krishna , Governor of Maharashtra; Vijaysingh Mohite-Patil, Minister for Tourism, Maharashtra; Shri Suresh Shetty, Minister of State (Tourism); and Smt. Sanjeevanee Kutty, Secretary (Tourism).

“The ambience of the place during the festival has a fresh look. From last year onwards there has been an innovative sound system which avoids noise pollution,” says Alka Vanage, senior manager of festivals and events, MTDC.

There will also be heritage tour from 5 to 7 pm organised by Mumbai University students. Tickets for the Festival are priced at Rs 200 and Rs 75 per head and will be available at all MTDC offices, the Gateway of India and Rhythm House.
