Educational institutes in Gujarat have witnessed a dip in terms of ranking under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) as against last year. Apart from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, that retained its top position, only few a pharmacy colleges and the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar performed well this time.

Interestingly, none of the architecture and law colleges from the state featured in the list of top 100 colleges.

The India Rankings 2018 were done under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) that considered 3,954 institutes across nine parameters. While the IIMA was ranked first in the list of management institutes, IIM-Bangalore was ranked second followed by IIM-Calcutta and IIM-Lucknow.

However, surprisingly, despite being ranked number 1 in the management category, IIMA did not feature in the overall ranking list. From Gujarat, the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar was ranked 39 in the overall ranking list and 27 in the engineering category. Among colleges, St Xaviers college and PD Patel Institute of Applied Sciences were ranked at 65 and 48 respectively.

"We need to analyse the parameters and understand the system better. As of now, it gets difficult to understand as we were ranked 8 in 2016, 30 in 2017 and 27 in 2018 and 39 in overall ranking in 2018", said Dr Sudhir Jain, Director, IITGN.

Father Robert Arockiasamy, Principal, St Xaviers college, Ahmedabad said, "It is a systematic pattern which is accepted at the national level. We are not happy with the rank but would like to fare better in terms of ranking. This is the first year that we applied as we had missed the date last year. There are lot of parameters on which the rankings are given and due to which some colleges may not figure. For example they ask for number of students for PhD programme, and in such a parameter, our college would not figure. But we cannot complain as the government is trying to do something better for education."

GUJARAT FARES WELL IN PHARMACY:

This year, four institutes from Gujarat including MS University, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Institute of Pharmacy-Nirma University and LM Pharmacy college have been ranked under top 25. While MS University has been ranked 12, NIPER, Nirma and LM Pharmacy college.

While Institute of Rural Management, Anand was ranked 29 in 2017, this year it was ranked 43 in the management category. Similarly, of the five institutes that were ranked under 100 from Gujarat in engineering category, this year, only two were ranked and that included IITGN and SVNIT, Surat.

Commenting on the rankings, Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said, "IIMA has saved the image of Gujarat otherwise none of the institutes has been ranked in top 10 in any category including medicine, law, architecture, engineering and pharmacy.
