The new excise policy on liquor sales in Delhi was implemented on October 1 this year, due to which all the liquor stores in the national capital are to remain closed till November 17, 2021. Now, it is expected that the liquor prices in the city will go up once the stores reopen.

Private-owned liquor shops in Delhi, which make up around 40 percent of the lot in the national capital, people in the city have resorted to buying booze from government liquor stores, increasing the demand for their inventory, forcing them to stock up frequently.

It is expected that the liquor prices in Delhi will increase by 8 to 10 percent once the shops across the union territory open once again. This means that if a specific brand costs Rs 400 in wholesale, it will cost Rs 432 after the price revisions under the new policy.

The revisions in the liquor prices in Delhi are expected as under the new excise policy implemented by the government, almost all excise duty and VAT owed to the government have been included in the license fee of the vendors, at the time of acquiring the license.

The Delhi government has made changes to the previous policy as the earlier system saw a lot of corruption as vendors often hid the actual amount of units sold in their stores. As per the earlier system, the shops had to pay the taxes on every unit sold by them.

In its official release regarding the prices of liquor in Delhi as per the excise rules, the government stated that if a bottle of liquor costs Rs 470 to the customer now, the new price will be around Rs 490. This is an effective increase of 4.25 percent for customers, while the prices for wholesalers have been increased by around 8 to 10 percent in Delhi.

Further, the excise department of Delhi has ordered that the ex-distillery prices in the national capital need to be the lowest across India so that the impact of the increase in wholesale prices in minimal. The exact changes in the liquor prices across Delhi will be known once the shops open up once again from November 17.
