The Delhi Police have registered an FIR in a case where a fake Unified Payments Interface (UPI) address was found registered under the name of 'PM Care Fund'

The action was initiated after an online complaint was received by the police regarding the fake UPI address that has been named in a way that it resembles the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'PM Cares Fund' account meant to receive contributions from people to fight against coronavirus.

The account was also promoted on social media, following which the matter was raised with the State Bank of India and it was blocked immediately, an official informed.

“Thank you for notifying us about this Fraud UPI ID. We have immediately alerted our UPI team and they are on the job to block the same. We sincerely appreciate your alertness [sic],” SBI said in a tweet.

DCP (Cyber Crime) Anyesh Roy also said that the fake UPI was highlighted by a Twitter user, adding that the correct UPI ID of PM CARES Fund is pmcares@sbi. Please note, the correct UPI ID of PM CARES Fund is pmcares@sbi. Thanks to alert citizen @bishwesh0604 for getting a fake UPI ID pmcare@sbi blocked. Legal action has been initiated," he tweeted.

"We have received a complaint against the fraudster and an FIR has been registered into the matter. We request donors to not fall prey to online frauds. Please verify the UPI address before initiating any payment,” The Hindu quoted an officer without naming.

PM Cares is an emergency situation relief fund that was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday where people can contribute in the government's fight against coronavirus.
