A senior resident doctor at the Sushrut Trauma Centre has been transferred to Delhi government's Lok Nayak Hospital under punishment and will only work under medical supervision after he conducted traction on a wrong patient. The doctor operated on a patient named Vijendra Tyagi, instead of Virendra, which led to anger among the patient's family.

On April 17, Vijendra Tyagi met with an accident near Tronica City in Ghaziabad and was rushed to the Sushrut Trauma Centre in Delhi for injuries in the head. He received seven sutures in the head and was supposed to get discharged a day later on Thursday, April 19, the doctor put traction on his right leg.

Skeletal traction is inserted to put weights on the hip/leg and is done by putting pins in the legs and adding weights. After one of the pins has been inserted, weights are attached to it so the bone can be pulled into the correct position. Traction helps in treating bones/muscle disorders or injuries.

"We have taken a strict action against the doctor and have transferred him to the Lok Nayak Hospital, where he will work under supervision. He is banned for the time being from doing any surgeries, but we are still investigating and thus will take the disciplinary action once the decision is made," said Dr Ajay Behl, Medical Superintendent, Sushrut Trauma Centre.

While Vijendra has now been discharged and has recovered from the traction pin holes which had been created in his right leg, he is able to walk properly, but his family is angry and looking to take an action against the hospital.

Meanwhile, Virendra's traction was done and he is recovering from his hip-joint illness.
