States across the country have been distressed over the shortage of coal in all the power plants, warning the Centre and citizens of a power blackout if the demands are not met. The Delhi government has also come out today, stating there is an acute shortage of coal in the power plants.

Just a day after the central government dismissed the possibility of an energy crisis in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has stated that the power plants in the national capital are suffering greatly, and won’t be able to sustain much longer without coal supply.

Delhi Power Minister Satyendra Jain has said that the power plants in Delhi are suffering from an acute shortage of coal, and they only have the availability of 2 to 3 days worth of coal in the power plants, according to ANI reports.

The power minister further said that the NTPC has capped the production capacity of its plants to 55 percent. Satyendra Jain further said that Delhi used to get around 4000 megawatts of electricity earlier, but the number has now been cut down to half.

As per ANI, the power minister said, “There is a coal shortage in most of the power plants. The stock is left for only 2-3 days. NTPC capped the production capacity of its plants to 55%. Earlier we used to get 4000 megawatts of electricity but now we are not getting even half of that.”

The reports of a shortage of coal across several states, along with long power cuts have been in the news for a couple of days now. States such as Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, and others have reported that their coal supply is running dangerously low.

Union Minister RK Singh had assured the Delhi government yesterday, stating that the national capital is not headed towards a power crisis yet. Before this, the Delhi government had stated that if the coal supply is not met in 2-3 days, the national capital is headed towards a mass power outage.
