Mayanti Langer is not just a “female sports presenter.” She is not known just because she is associated with a respected cricketing family.

Mayanti broke the stereotypes and shown that there is an equal place for a woman in an other-wise male-dominating sports industry in India.

She is one of the faces of India’s presenters during big sporting events and till now, she has moderated and presented six world cups, across cricket, football and hockey.

Unfortunately, this generation has always focused more on her appearance and her attire rather than what she does.

Speaking to Shibani Dandekar, another sports presenter of India, Mayanti opened up about how she has dealt with the body shaming and sexism that comes along her glamorous job.

“I don’t think it [body shamming] was that significant till last year’s ICC Champions Trophy. So, I got trolled badly for my lungi skirt. It was hilarious because I myself was laughing at the memes. Yes, I became a meme!

That was my success of the year. That’s when you know you’ve made it. You have made it with the millennials. Hallelujah! The Millennials know who you are!”

Reacting to an article written on her which said how uncomfortable Mayanti was on air as her job always has got burdened with sucking in her tummy and balancing on stilettos,” Mayanti said, “There was an article written about me, about wearing 5-inches heels and wearing skirts and wearing sleeveless and wearing this and why can’t I wear Indian clothes and why can’t I wear pants and suits and I’m like what’s your problem if I want to wear 5-inches heels? Because I’m comfortable in them. No one has forced me to wear them and that is my choice.”

The detail that angered her the most about the article was it was written by a woman!

“And I just felt that – this is the biggest problem! I was like the guys are just going to comment on the length of the skirt because they have nothing better to do. The woman is analysing ‘why is she wearing 5-inch, isn’t this more practical?”

“So this IPL, I did everything, we wore pants, we wore suits, we wore blazers, we wore mini-skirts, we wore dresses, we wore every single thing and it didn’t make a difference.

It would be unfair for me to say that I have been treated badly or I feel that there’s been that sexism in the workplace or that chauvinism in the workplace because I till today haven’t really faced it too badly. I have been in situations where I don’t think I have been treated as a female presenter I have never been in a situation where you just got to wear a dress and look good. You’re like, “No, you got to run the show,” she added.
