Banned cricketers David Warner and Steve Smith will be free to return to international and state duties from March 29 having served a 12-month suspension for their roles in the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal in 2018.

While their return has been affected by their respective shoulder injuries, it is difficult to imagine these two not getting picked for the England tour just ahead of the 2019 World Cup.

However, if these two were recalled, that would see two players losing their spot from the Aussie side and according to vice-captain and wicketkeeper Alex Carey, this issue has not been discussed yet in the Australian dressing room.

“We haven’t really spoken about it (Smith and Warner’s return) to be honest. It’s one of those things where the players in the squad right now are doing everything they can to say that’s their spot, that’s my position. If they’re performing and it makes it tough for the likes of Smith and Warner to come back in, that’s only stronger for Australian cricket," Carey told reporters at the fixture reveal for the 2020 Twenty20 World Cup.

While Carey's spot as the team's wicketkeeper might not be under the radar, his batting position could be.

The wicketkeeper-batsman opened for Australia in all the three ODIs against India but he failed to impress with the bat. He only managed 47 runs at 15.67. He prefers to open in limited-overs cricket, the same position where Warner delivers his best.

“I’d love to stay at the top. I love batting with Finchy (Aaron Finch) and I love opening in T20 cricket and one-day cricket. So it would be nice to have another opportunity up there.

To get a feel for the first 10 overs in an ODI international was a really good experience and hopefully, I get more opportunity at the top of the order there. If I don’t, if it’s back down the middle, I think against South Africa I really enjoyed that role as well," Carey added.
