Anrich Nortje is currently considered one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket. His exceptional speed and skill could have made him a lethal weapon for South Africa as they strive to secure their first World Cup title in India this October-November. Unfortunately, recent reports indicate that the 29-year-old will be unable to join the team in India due to a back injury.

Nortje's injury occurred during the second ODI of the five-match series against Australia, which took place on his home turf. After bowling five overs, he was forced to leave the field due to back spasms. Although he did not return to bowl, Nortje displayed his determination by coming out to bat in the second innings, scoring 10 runs off 13 balls. However, the Proteas made the wise decision to rule him out for the remainder of the series, prioritizing his recovery and avoiding any further risks before the World Cup.

It is worth noting that Nortje had been selected as part of South Africa's 15-member squad for this prestigious event.

With Anrich Nortje set to miss the ICC World Cup 2023, South Africa faces a significant challenge in finding a suitable replacement. In an attempt to address this issue, the team provided opportunities to several promising young players during the five-match ODI series against Australia. It is highly probable that one of these youngsters will earn a spot on the flight to India.

Anrich Nortje boasts an impressive track record in ODIs, having represented South Africa in 22 matches and securing 36 wickets with an average of 27.27. His absence will undoubtedly create a substantial void within the team for the ICC World Cup 2023, particularly due to his ability to utilize his pace effectively in Indian conditions.

South Africa World Cup squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Sisanda Magala, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen.
