India may have thrashed West Indies in the first Test in Rajkot last week, and also won the 2018 Asia Cup in Dubai before that, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the Test series in England last month was a bitter disappointment.

Most of the Indian batsmen looked all at sea for the majority of the series against the likes of James Anderson and Co, leading to yet another convincing overseas Test series defeat.

While there are several reasons why India's batting unit failed as a whole in England, legendary batsman Rahul Dravid has offered a keen insight into why the overall quality of batsmanship these days is deteriorating.

In an interview with The Week, Dravid explained the struggles faced by batsmen in today's day and age.

"Batsmanship comprises of many things. If you were to view it from the prism of shot-making ability, innovation, power, ability to hit sixes and scoring at a quicker rate, then there is no doubt batsmanship has improved. [But], if you view it from the prism of batting time, being able to get through challenging times and being able to play on tracks on which seam or spin is more, then maybe batsmanship has declined a little bit," said the India A and India Under-19 coach.

"Players now have to juggle between three formats and may not be getting to have as much red ball time and conditions. There were boys who came on the A tour with us to England, who had not played red ball cricket for six-to-seven months! It would never have happened before. The time they get to practice red ball cricket has altered drastically," he added.

Dravid is credited with playing a key role in building India's bench strength. Many young talents who have broken into the senior team, including the likes of Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal, have spoken about how the former India captain has helped them immensely over the years.
