Kamlesh Aggarwal, who runs a stationery shop at Andheri, thought he had been conned by one of his customers, who handed him a 'different looking' 500-rupee note that had a seemingly contrary numbering pattern. It was only after he rushed to a nearby bank enquiring about it that he was told that it was the latest security feature by the Reserve Bank of India.

For the first time a couple of months ago, the RBI issued Rs 100 and Rs 500 denomination bank notes in Mahatma Gandhi Series – 2005. The new numbering pattern has numerals in both the number panels in ascending size from left to right, while the first three alphanumeric characters are constant in size, which is a visible security feature in the bank notes so that the general public can easily distinguish a counterfeit note from a genuine one.

"The Reserve Bank of India in consultation with the Government of India, has been improving security features of Indian bank notes so as to make their counterfeiting difficult and make it easy for members of the public to identify genuine bank notes. The design of bank notes with numerals in ascending size is similar in all other respects to the current design of ?100 bank notes in Mahatma Gandhi Series – 2005 except for the new numbering pattern. The bank notes will continue to have "?" symbol on the obverse and the reverse, an inset letter 'R' in both the numbering panels, bear the signature of Dr. Raghuram G. Rajan, Governor, Reserve Bank of India, and the year of printing '2015' printed on the reverse of the bank notes," mentions a note issued by RBI further adding that all the bank notes issued by the Reserve Bank in the past will continue to be legal tender.

In fact apart from ascending numerical patterns for the visually impaired there are angular bleed lines on both right and left side of the note on the front side. While Rupees 100 will have four bleed lines Rupees 500 and Rupees 1000 notes will feature five and six bleed lines respectively. Also another identification mark used is a triangle sign for Rupees 100 while a circle and diamond sign on Rupees 500 and Rupees 1000 notes respectively.
