Indian entrepreneurs have made a significant contribution to the growth of fresh, creative ideas across all industries. Some people even quit their well-paying jobs to start their own businesses. One such person is Aproova Mehta, who left his promising job as a supply chain engineer at Amazon in 2010 with entrepreneurial aspirations but no clear plan for what he would do next.

Tapping into his entrepreneurial interest, he created a grocery delivery juggernaut Instacart in 2012 and established himself as one of the self-made billionaires of today with a net worth of $1.1 billion or Rs 9,000 crore company at the age of 37, Bloomberg reported.

Mehta's success story is an inspiring example of tenacity and the capacity to change course when faced with setbacks. The Indian-born entrepreneur has launched numerous startups before finding success with Instacart. As per his LinkedIn profile, he attended the University of Waterloo to earn his electrical engineering degree.

Mehta ran into difficulties with everything he tried to develop, from a social network for lawyers to a marketing company for gaming firms. But what makes his path extraordinary is that, rather than becoming disappointed, he found inspiration in a very ordinary issue—his empty refrigerator.

One day, as he was gazing into his empty refrigerator, the metaphorical lightbulb went out. Mehta spotted a widespread problem: the hassle of food shopping in the modern era, when practically everything else could be purchased online. He decided to take it upon himself to fix the problem and started working on the Instacart app's initial code right away.

Growth of his company

Instacart received $2.3 million in venture capital funding in a short period of time. With the help of important retail partners like Aldi, Costco, and Kroger, the San Francisco-based startup now provides services to more than 14,000 American communities.

Since Mehta first introduced the app in 2012, the firm has delivered more than 900 million orders totaling 20 billion goods, according to information provided by Instacart in an SEC filing before going public. Mehta will leave his position as executive chairman of the business with the IPO, completing an 11-year tenure with the organization after standing down as CEO last year.

Mehta, 33, owned a 10% interest in his company by 2020 and was a billionaire. Instacart was worth $39 billion in 2021. Mehta left his position as CEO in July 2021 and is currently the executive chairman of the company. The new CEO of Instacart is Fidji Simo, formerly the head of the Facebook app.

Mehta appeared on Forbes' list of the 30 under 30 in 2013. Indeed, Mehta's tale serves as a monument to the importance of perseverance, vision, and the willingness to take chances.
