Retirement age generally varies between late 50s to mid 60s for most people. But for some individuals, it can go well into their 90s. The foremost example is one of the country’s oldest billionaires Prathap C Reddy. Reddy, now 91 years old, still follows a six-day work week instead of resting on his laurels.

Dr Reddy draws his huge fortune from Apollo Hospitals Enterprises, which today has a market cap of over Rs 69,700 crore. The family holds around 29 percent stake in the listed company. Over 40 years since he took the big entrepreneurial leap, Reddy still diligently works at his Chennai office, just taking one weekly off. From 10 am to 5 pm for six days, Reddy is at work just like any other professional.

Today, his massive healthcare business is being expanded and led forward by his four daughters - Preetha Reddy (MD), Suneeta Reddy (executive vice chairperson), Shobana Kamineni (executive vice chairperson) and Sangita Reddy (Joint MD). After mentoring the second generation into successful and award-winning business leaders, Dr Reddy is now helping his third generation carve out their niches in the Apollo group.

Under the second-generation of Reddys, Apollo has grown into a conglomerate with 21 brands including 71 hospitals, 5,000 pharmacies, 291 primary care clinics, a diagnostics chain, maternity services and a digital health portal. Apart from being a prudent entrepreneur, Reddy also has a carefully designed succession strategy.

To ensure the Apollo group builds on its success rather than just surviving, he has been instilling leadership qualities in his next generations. This is perhaps the most significant reason why Dr Reddy is still a working professional at 91. Nine of the billionaire’s 10 grandchildren are already part of the business. A recent LiveMint report had revealed that Dr Reddy had asked his grandchildren their interests and strengths and was in the process of sending out individual KRAs (key responsibility areas) for the next Apollo generation.
