Filmmaker Nishikant Kamat, who is best remembered for directing Ajay Devgn-Tabu-Shriya Saran starring film 'Drishyam', breathed his last in Hyderabad on Monday, August 17, 2020. The 50-year-old was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, which he was fighting since two years.

The official press statement read: "Mr. Nishikant Kamat (50 years, Male) was admitted to AIG Hospitals on 31st July 2020 with complains of fever and excessive fatigue. It was diagnosed that he was suffering from Liver Cirrhosis for the past two years. Initially, we started antibiotics and supportive medications upon which Mr. Kamat showed improvement, but his condition soon deteriorated with progressive liver dysfunction and drowsiness. He was immediately shifted to the ICU, where his general condition gradually declined. Since yesterday, he developed respiratory failure and hypotension. Despite maximum efforts from Hepatologists, Gastroenterologists, Pulmonologists and Intensivists, his condition deteriorated eventually leading to multiple organ failure. Today, from afternoon onwards his vital parameters started declining and at 1624 hrs he succumbed to his illness. Our condolences are with his family, friends and fans."

What is liver cirrhosis: Liver cirrhosis is a complication of liver disease that involves loss of liver cells and irreversible scarring of the liver.

What causes it: Alcohol, viral hepatitis B and C are the most common causes of liver cirrhosis.

Symptoms seen: Nishikant Kamat complained of two symptoms - Fever and fatigue. The other common symptoms are - Loss of appetite, easy bruising, jaundice, itching.

How can it be diagnosed: A liver biopsy can confirm liver cirrhosis.

Treatment options: While early detection helps treat it better, transplantation of liver is also an important option for people suffering from liver cirrhosis.

Life expectancy after detection: When there are no major complications involved, the life expectancy for people diagnosed is 12 years. In other cases, i.e for advanced liver cirrhosis, the life expectancy reduces to six months-two years.
