Playback singer Amit Gupta is gung-ho about his latest song, Meet Bros’ Radhe Radhe in Dream Girl for a number of reasons. “It’s a commercial number, picturised on the National Award winner Ayushmann Khurrana, Ekta Kapoor’s production and shot on such a massive scale. It’s a big deal for me,” smiles Amit. When the film was being discussed, director Raaj Shaandilyaa, whom he considers brother from another mother, told him that they were working on its biggest track. “When I sang the song, everyone felt my voice matched Ayushmann’s personality. The song will be special for me all my life,” he adds.

Last year, the artiste had Jugni with Nooran Sisters in Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster and Neha Kakkar’s Maahi Ve from Wajah Tum Ho, in which he sang a small portion. “If I’m the solo singer, the project is modest and if it’s a big song, then I get just a few lines to sing or then the movie fails at the box office,” he says, adding, “But Radhe Radhe will give my career the boost that I have been looking for.” Amit admits that the number has opened more doors for him. However, he has been approached for songs similar to this one. “I’m a versatile singer — I can sing Sufi, romantic as well as dance numbers on a high pitch. But composers are mostly asking me to sing something like Radhe Radhe. Let’s see how many of them are actually executed,” says he.

As a BTech student in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Amit had a band and would participate in college competitions. In 2010, he auditioned for Indian Idol 4 and came to Mumbai.

However, he had to return to his hometown to appear for his final exams. “At the same time, I was on television. My juniors started calling me Amit sir. I can’t describe the feeling,” he says excitedly. “As soon as my exams ended, I moved to Mumbai and haven’t picked up my degree yet,” he laughs. He was later selected for Indian Idol 6 but decided to walk away from reality shows to focus on his live band. “I don’t find much reality in reality shows. But recording can help you fulfil your dream if you want to be the voice of an actor. You are also likelier to be remembered for playback than talent hunts,” he reasons. Among the actors, he would like to sing for Salman Khan. “I’ve sung with him during jam sessions at his house because he is a music lover. Now that I have a big song like Radhe Radhe, I’m closer to my goal,” says he.

Next up, he has a remake of Roop Tera Mastana (Aradhana) and an original single, Ho Bewajah, which releases next month. “I have film songs too but I can’t talk about them yet,” he signs off.
