Headlined by Ajay Devgn, Maidaan is a biographical sports drama film based on the golden era of Indian football from 1952 to 1962. Ajay portrays legendary football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, under whose leadershp India won the gold medals in Asian Games in 1951 and 1962, and reached the semi-finals of the 1956 Summer Olympics, becoming the first Asian country to do.

Produced by Boney Kapoor and directed by Amit Sharma, Maidaan was announced in 2019 and was set to release in November 2020. But due to Covid-19, the film couldn't complete its shooting and was postponed. There were no updates about the project, untill March 2023 when the teaser was released with a new release date of 23 June 2023. But, the film was postponed again due to delays in its post-production.

Since then, there have been reports that Maidaan's shooting is still incomplete and the makers have exceeded their budget. Shutting down these rumours, Boney Kapoor has now told Hindustan Times, "I recently showed some portions of the film to almost 300 people in Chennai and they loved it. The film’s shoot is complete; however, extensive VFX work is underway, which is taking some time. Contrary to what reports suggest, the budget has not been exceeded."

A source close to the film's production team was also quoted telling the portal, "“Maidaan is a unique film with a long-lasting appeal. It is expected to gain momentum through word of mouth, much like Dangal. Hence, we are taking our time to select the date and there’s no rush."

The report also stated that the release date will be announced next week. The makers are contemplating whether to release the film this year with Tiger 3, Animal, and Dunki already lined up to hit theatres in the last three months or wait for the early next year.
