Ameesha Patel is back with a hit. The actress recently starred in the blockbuster Gadar 2, her first clean hit in nearly two decades. While Ameesha started with two huge hits at the beginning of her career, the successes dried up as the years passed. In a recent interview, the actress addressed one of her earlier films’ failure and charted it to Salman Khan’s legal troubles.

In an interaction with Bollywood Hungama, Ameesha discussed her 2002 release Yeh Hai Jalwa, which starred her and Salman and was directed by David Dhawan. The film was a commercial failure and was released around the time that Salman was embroiled in the hit-and-run case.

“Yeh Hai Jalwa was one of David Dhawan's best films. Salman has never looked more handsome and the music and everything was good. But I think because earlier the media gave news the audiences were not so open about accepting some negative news about their favourite actors. Salman's accident had newly happened so Yeh Hai Jalwa got sidelined. Had the audience been open to it…that is one film that would have done really well,” the actress said.

Yeh Hai Jalwa was released in theatres in July 2002. Salman’s hit-and-run case took place two months later in September. The actor was arrested for allegedly running over five pavement dwellers in Mumbai. The accident left one dead and four injured. In 2015, Salman was sentenced to five years in prison in the case by a trial court. However, later that year, the Bombay High Court ruled him not guilty, reversing the order.

Ameesha, meanwhile, is back with Gadar 2, sequel to her 2001 blockbuster Gadar. The film, which also stars Sunny Deol, Utkarsh Sharma, Simrat Kaur, and Manish Wadhwa, has minted Rs 500 crore worldwide and Rs 400 crore in India alone. It is one of the highest-grossing Hindi films in history.
