Did you know that the 10th day of every month is ‘No Honking Day’. If not, then, motorists and commuters, do make a note.

Mission Peace, a citizen’s group in the city, is investing time and money to transform Bangalore by reducing noise pollution in the city.

The group comprises both youngsters and senior citizens, who enthusiastically hold rallies on the 10th of every month.

Mission Peace was conceptualised by Dr Sunita de Sousa, leader associate director (biochemistry), AstraZeneca India, Bangalore, in 2008.

Since then, the group has taken on many volunteers such as Pravir Bagrodia, Deepthi Poovaiah and her mother Radhika Poovaiah, 82-year-old Jagadisan, and many more.

They interact on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook to discuss and address issues relating to noise pollution.

“Noise on the road has a harmful effect on people, leading to aggression and loss of hearing. It disturbs one’s peace of mind and affects our health and wellbeing.

Bangalore, our Garden City, is growing fast and with it, traffic and noise pollution is increasing. Our aim is to reduce noise pollution and turn Bangalore into the peaceful city it once was.

With it, follows peace, good health and caring,” said a participant at a No Honking Day rally on Saturday.

“As soon as the traffic signal turns green, everybody starts honking, I think we should drive and ride with a little patience and stop honking unnecessarily. Also, the autos in the city need a quick revamp. They should not alter their silencers since its noise is shrill and unbearable,” said Shreyas Akarshan, a student of Surana College.

Noise pollution causes annoyance and aggression, hypertension, high stress levels and can trigger psychological illnesses. Mission Peace is trying to create public awareness on the unnecessary use of the horn and the ill-effects of noise.

It also promotes the use of silencers on autorickshaws and to convince government regulators to implement laws on noise pollution.

Saturday’s rally was the third in the series since its launch in March.
