The police have intensified the hunt for Indian Mujahideen (IM) sleeper cells in Tumkur after revelations of the arrested IM operatives in Delhi that those involved in the 2010 stadium blasts in Bangalore had taken shelter in Tumkur.

Hitherto, the police had confined their search to Bangalore, its outskirts and neighbouring districts. Tumkur police have formed a team to collect information about terror sleeper cells operating in the district. They are keeping an eye on students studying in engineering and medical colleges, and polytechnics in the district. They are also carrying out background checks of some students who hail from North India.

Police sources said that IM had executed the terror attack in the city with the help of locals and students.
“We came to know that a few students had helped Yasin Bhatkal and other terrorists who executed the Chinnaswamy stadium blasts. We are investigating this angle and hope to nab them,” a police officer said.

In the last week of November, Mohammed Qateel Siddiqi, Gayur Ahmed Jamali and Farooq were arrested along with four other IM terrorists by the Delhi police.

Investigations revealed that Siddiqi, Jamali and Farooq were involved in the Chinnaswamy stadium blast.

They admitted that they got help from students based in Tumkur. Hence, the local police are verifying the background
of some of students in the district.

“We suspect that Yasin Bhatkal got shelter in Tumkur with the help of students, who were sympathetic towards IM. The Tumkur and Bangalore CCB police are trying to track down those involved,” a senior police officer said.
