KFCC, on Monday, had filed a petition against the screening of Raavan in 36 theatres in Karnataka by Anil Ambani’s Reliance Big Entertainment against the original resolution of screening it in 24 theatres.
The much-hyped Mani Ratnam’s multi-lingual directorial venture Raavan, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan faces legal hurdle in the high court of Karnataka.
The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), on Monday, had filed a petition against the screening of Raavan in 36 theatres in Karnataka by Anil Ambani’s Reliance Big Entertainment (RBEL) against the original resolution of screening it in 24 theatres.
Justice Anand Byra Reddy has adjourned the hearing of the petition filed by KFCC to June 24.
The KFCC has challenged the Competition Commission of India (CCI) order dated June 18 in the high court on Monday.
The CCI on June 18 had issued an order allowing the screening of Mani Ratnam’s Raavan in Karnataka. The interim order in response to a petition filed by Anil Ambani’s Reliance Big Entertainment (RBEL) had stayed the ban imposed by KFCC on releasing it in more than 24 theatres.
The chamber, comprising local film makers, had banned the screening of the Hindi (Raavan) and Tamil (Raavanan) versions of the film, in theatres across the state.
According to the CCI’s order, the KFCC need not interfere with the screening of the film and it was entirely up to Big Pictures to release it in as many theatres as needed as it is an independent body and therefore has the right to do so.
The KFCC’s contention was that Big Pictures earlier went against the undertaking given to KFCC during the screening of the Hindi film Kites that the picture will be released in only 24 theatres.
However, Big Pictures had not stuck to the resolution again, and had gone ahead with the screening of Raavan in 36 theatres across the state.
Hrithik Roshan-starrer Kites, which was released in 46 theatres across the state, was greeted with protests. The members of the chamber even disrupted the screening of the movie in several theatres in the city.
The chamber claimed that Kites was released in more theatres, though it was earlier agreed to be released in 24 movie halls. The members also stated that two Kannada movies, Shankar IPS and Nooru Janmaku, could not be screened due to the want of
theatres.
