A big banner thanking MLA Raghu C for tarring the road is conspicuous on CMH Road.  It’s so big that you can’t miss seeing it. But ironically, just a few metres down the road, equally massive craters can be seen on 80-Feet Road, as well as the Old Madras Road-100 Feet Road junction.
Although Old Madras Road sees heavy traffic from buses and trucks to private vehicles, the craters here have been left unattended for a while now.

Sudarshan Mandal, a shopkeeper at the junction, points out, “I see accidents here every day. There are people who skid and fall due to the loose stones on the road. Some even lose balance and hit other vehicles as they try to go around the potholes. Although this is such an important stretch of road, nobody has bothered to repair or maintain the road.”

There are similar potholes on the Indiranagar 80 Feet Road. But what makes travelling on this road worse, is the sewage that has been spilling on to the road for over a month now. While cars can ignore the sewage for the most part, bikers and pedestrians bear the brunt. Concrete slabs on the footpath have been removed and haphazardly placed, leaving the drain exposed and overflowing. and the footpath just as uneven and dangerous.

“If 80 Feet Road is in this state, imagine the condition of smaller roads in other places of the city,” says Rachel Patrick, a student living in Indiranagar. Raju P, who owns a pan shop on 80 Feet Road, says, “There are many residences near here and Resurrection Church. This road is opposite the SV Road metro station and yet, it is so difficult to walk on it. Also, the road is badly-lit at night and many people prefer to walk on the road rather than the footpath.”

MLA Raghu, for his part, says the process of repairing the road has been initiated. “The commissioner has approved the works and in a few days, the job code will also be given. We expect the work to begin by January 21, after Pongal,” he promises.

He goes on to add that the road will be repaired from Benniganahalli to the Indiranagar BDA complex and from the beginning of 80 Feet Road to the BSNL junction. Regarding the leaking drainage, he assures that the matter will be looked into. “There is some private construction happening there. We will see what the problem is and sort it out,” he says.
