Bangalore traffic police undertook a five-hour-long drive to crackdown on cases of drink and drive in the city on Saturday night and booked 973 offenders. The drive, which started at 9 pm and ended at 2 am, took place at 117 places in city and a total of 13,270 motorists were checked for alcohol consumption.
Of the 973 offenders, which included two women, 272 were car drivers, 569 two-wheeler riders, 48 tempo traveler drivers, 41 auto drivers, 23 lorry drivers, 15 maxi cab drivers and five bus drivers. In Peenya limits alone, 68 people were caught for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The city traffic police have been conducting such special drive against drink and driving on Saturday nights for the past two months. Since April 1, police have started impounding the driving licences of even those who are caught driving under the influence of alcohol for the first time. They also recommend the transport department to suspend DLs of such offenders, on which the transport department will take a call. The city police have booked over 18,000 drink and driving cases this year.
