A joyride on a Sunday turned tragic after a piece of equipment came crashing down at the Superstar Amusement Park in Maninagar, killing three and injuring 29, said the police.

Thirty-one people were nearly 20 feet above the ground when the pendulum-like structure, with a maximum capacity of 32, snapped at the entertainment facility at Kankaria Lake. In no time, it plunged to a hard concrete surface.

"Primary investigation has shown that the heavy-duty bolts had become loose which led to the accident. Few revellers sitting on the impact side suffered severe injuries, while others escaped with minor wounds," said Rajesh Bhatt, additional chief fire officer.

The injured are being treated at LG Hospital, while a case has been registered against the owner of the amusement park for operating the faulty ride, popularly known as 'Discovery ride', officials from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) told DNA.

The police have identified two of the dead as Manali Rajvadi, 24, a resident of CTM area, and 22-year-old Mohammad Zahid Momin, who lived in Danilimda. One injured is in critical condition with multiple fractures.

The police said the ride became operational in 2015. The park staff has claimed that the equipment received periodic maintenance. The cops have arrested two operators, one of them identified as Gansham Patel.

The police apart, AMC Commissioner Vijay Nehra said, a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory will also be probing the accident. "It will help us ascertain the reason for the malfunction of the machine. Right now, our priority is the treatment of the victims."

Jignesh Patel, chairman of the entertainment committee of AMC, said all rides at the amusement park have been suspended. "Prima facie, it appears that one of the pipes broke," he said, "The company had submitted the monthly maintenance report on July 6."
