On the fifth day of the mega drive carried out by the police department along with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) against illegal parking in sector two areas of the city, officials face resistance from locals.

While the officials were clearing "no parking zones" near Shah Alam, Muhammad Tariq Pathan (22) jumped in front of the crane to stop the demolition. Later, he also threatened to slash his wrists with a blade. He was eventually detained by police officers who escorted him to Dani Limda police station. The police said Pathan's Activa was illegally parked in the area and it was towed during the drive. Regarding that, he had an argument with the police officials and later got violent.

In another incident, people pelted stones at AMC officials in Asarva when they were trying to carry out demolition in the area. None of the officials was hurt in the incident. A primary complaint has been registered against the miscreants in Shahibaug police station.

Wednesday's drive covered 20 km in zone 4, 5, and 6. Additional Commissioner of Police (Sector 2) Ashok Kumar Yadav led 350 police officials, including three DCPs, three ACPs, 18 police inspectors and other officers, on the drive. There were around 25 teams deployed in areas such as Sardar Nagar, Shahibaug, Naroda, Kagdapith, Maninagar, among others.

During the drive, 215 notices were issued to defaulters. The officials towed 39 vehicles and collected Rs 34,000-fine from offenders.

"During the drive, everything went smoothly, but there were a few hiccups where civilians tried to stop our officers and created a ruckus," Yadav told DNA. "They also got into scuffles with officers. But the situation was contained easily and the drive moved forward." He also said a similar drive would be carried out on Thursday.
