The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday directed the state government to furnish information regarding the procedure adopted for admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

Government pleader Manisha Shah made oral submissions before the high court on behalf of the government.

The high court was informed that about 1.17 lakh seats have been made available under RTE in the state for the coming academic session. The government said it had received close to two lakh application forms, while receiving centres had received about 1.50 lakh forms.

The high court sought to know the process for allotting seats under RTE, and also asked for more details about the grievance redressal mechanism. The court directed the government to file an affidavit, and fixed April 26 as the next date for hearing the matter further.

In the meanwhile, the deadline for submission of online applications for admissions under RTE would expire on Thursday. The deadline was April 15, but the government had extended it till April 25 due to complaints that some applicants were facing difficulties in obtaining income certificates because of Lok Sabha elections. The government had also announced the revised schedule for completing the admissions.
