Here’s a double bonanza for management aspirants. Besides an increase of around 53% in the number of seats for students, management institutes in the state, for the first time, have been allowed to start second shifts for Masters in Business Administration (MBA)/ Masters in Management Studies (MMS).

From the existing 21,585 seats for management, the total number of seats has gone up to 33,045 for the academic year 2010-11. The second shift in colleges will begin after 1pm. Till now, only polytechnics and Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in the state had been allowed to conduct second shifts.

“A management degree is highly popular and sought-after. To meet the ever-increasing demand, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has approved second shifts for management programmes this year. Further, the AICTE has also allowed new colleges to have 120 students in their first batch, instead of 60, which used to be the earlier rule. This has led to a sizeable increase in the total number of seats,” said an official from the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE).

The AICTE approves professional colleges for engineering and pharmacy, and postgraduate courses in management and computer applications. College proposals go to the AICTE in December. After assessing the proposals, AICTE sends across approvals by June 30 of the following year.

The state had sent proposals for approximately 240 new institutes. Of these, around 116 new colleges of engineering, business management, computer applications, and pharmacy have been approved by the AICTE, across Maharashtra. The approvals, having come on June 30, will come into effect from this year itself.

The DTE, however, is still in the process of ascertaining the exact number of seats that have been approved under various programmes across the state. They released the MBA numbers on Saturday.

Experts said that while this has opened up more seats for students, there needs to be a quality check too. “A management degree is a necessity in many organisations now, so naturally there is a demand. However, a check on the quality of these colleges needs to be there,” said Stephen D’Silva, director, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS).

Around 65 new MBA colleges have been sanctioned across the state, while 16 have been allowed to start a second shift. Meanwhile, Mumbai has acquired nine new management colleges this year. Also, five colleges in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai have been allowed to begin the second shift this year. These include include Lala Lajpat Rai Institute of Management (Mahalaxmi), Anjuman-i-Islam College (Fort), Yerala College of Management (Navi Mumbai), Don Bosco College (Kurla) and Sterling College (Nerul).

Apart from management, there are 88,370 engineering seats, 8,513 in pharmacy and 7,138 MCA seats in the state.
