Sandberg also recently spoke out against Trump's order to reinstate the global gag rule.
Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg donated $1 million to the non-profit organisation Planned Parenthood that provides affordable health care in the United States (US).
"On behalf of the more that two million patients who come to Planned Parenthood each year, we are so grateful to Sheryl Sandberg for her longstanding, and now increased, support for our health care," Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards said in a statement sent to CNNTech.
Planned Parenthood also revealed to CNNTech that long time donor Sandberg plans to give $1 million more.
The organisation is one of many affected by House Republicans' push in the US Congress to block federal healthcare funds through the 'global gag rule'. In the statement, Richards further goes on to say the block "would deny millions of people" of healthcare, particularly people of colour, many of whom live in rural parts of the country.
While federal funds do not go towards abortions, Planned Parenthood does provide services like birth control, pregnancy tests, abortion and preventive health care.
Sandberg recently spoke out against Donald Trump's order to reinstate the global gag rule - a policy which prevents US non-governmental organisations around the globe from receiving aid by the US government to perform or discuss abortions. Through a bill by US Representative Nita Lowey, she has called for the rule be reversed.
“Reinstatement of the dangerous and arbitrary Global Gag Rule is an especially outrageous assault on women. It has not decreased the rate of abortions and unwanted pregnancies under previous Republican Administrations," said Lowey in a statement, adding, “Reinstatement of the dangerous and arbitrary Global Gag Rule is an especially outrageous assault on women.
