There is a village in Assam called Jatinga. This village is famous for a bizarre phenomenon where birds commit suicide. Multiple reports and videos suggest that during the month of August and November, birds of varied species die of mysterious reasons. 

This occurs more during dark nights with no moonlight. For many years, the villagers believed that evil spirits were sending them some message. And to protect themselves from the evil, they erected bamboo sticks in the surroundings. 

Many folklore surrounds the eerie and bizarre phenomenon. People were unable to decipher the reason behind so many birds opting to commit suicide together. One thing that the villagers had figured out that these incidents only happened during one time of the year with certain weather conditions. 

As this phenomenon gained popularity, researchers were drawn to the location. After the study, experts found that birds are attracted to light and during the dark nights, they would be attracted to the lights in the village.

In an attempt to reach the lights, the birds would descend and get caught by bamboo. After the revelation behind the phenomenon, the researchers have introduced various initiatives to educate the villagers and make them understand the real reason behind the death of a large number of birds in the region.
