Xiaomi has been around for only five years, and has been making smartphones for only the last four of those years, but that isn't stopping the China-based tech firm from scaling new heights each passing quarter. They now build smartphones, fitness trackers, water purifiers, WiFi routers, power banks, headphones and their own ROM. But another field seemsto be opening up, as reports are now coming out that Xiaomi is building a laptop.

According to news reports, inside sources have claimed that Xiaomi is building a laptop that they aim to launch early 2016. Apparently, the company has been in talks with Samsung to provide the processors, and that deal might well extend to providing the displays as well. If those reports are true, Samsung could stand to make a lot of money off the deal, seeing as Xiaomi products have developed quite the manic fan following with the success their smartphones. A laptop from Xiaomi, if their past modus operandi is anything to go by, will likely pack some premium specs and features at a steal of a price, putting it in direct competition with Apple and Lenovo in particular.

So now, let the speculation begin. What can we expect from Xiaomi? I say, the most likely design features would be, considering Xiaomi's history, to give the laptop the premium Apple feel. That would mean a thin laptop with a narrow bezel full HD display, possibly with a coloured matte finish back. We might even end up getting a touchscreen tabtop hybrid, the likes of Lenovo's Yoga 3. The price should, however, not even come close to a Mac or Yoga 3, probably remaining in the 30K to 40K range? This is taking into account that Xiaomi loves to draw people in with the look of their products, and then hook them with an unbeatable price tag.

But the main question here is, what OS would Xiaomi pack into their laptops? That, unfortunately, could be anyone's guess. Windows would be the best way to stay competitive, seeing as it's still the widest-used PC operating system, but that would mean kicking up the price in stores to accommodate legit Windows 10 copies. Chrome OS, on the other hand, seems like a close bet. Xiaomi has been modding Android for years now with MIUI, so seeing them mod and use the Chromebook operating system isn't very far fetched. however, the Chromebook has very limited capabilities, and it's just not Xiaomi's style to limit a wide-range product to a niche market. Maybe they'll take us completely by surprise and ship the laptops with FreeDOS or Ubuntu, Or maybe, if we're lucky, we'll actually see the beginnings of a new OS soon. However, seeing as Xiaomi is aiming for a 2016 reveal, that's not a likely possibility.
